WAAS GPS For Garmin Pilot
Add highly accurate WAAS GPS data when the GDL 39 is used with the Garmin Pilot app. This supports a more capable mobile-device aviation setup.
Flexible Device Connection
Connect through Bluetooth on supported mobile devices and displays, with cable connection available for certain Garmin units. The supported connection method varies by display.
Portable ADS-B Information
The GDL 39 receives TIS-B traffic and FIS-B weather for supported Garmin portable aviation devices and mobile apps. Support differs by display: aera 795/796, aera 660, aera 500 series, GPSMAP 695/696, G3X, G3X Touch, ForeFlight Mobile, FltPlan Go, and Garmin Pilot each have their own listed capabilities.
Display-Specific Capabilities
Traffic presentation and attitude capability depend on the connected display or app. Garmin Pilot, aera 795/796, aera 660, ForeFlight Mobile, and FltPlan Go are listed as TargetTrend™ capable, while attitude from GDL 39 3D is available with Garmin Pilot, aera 795/796, aera 660, ForeFlight Mobile, and FltPlan Go. Garmin Pilot for Android™ devices does not support SVX™.
Operating Specifications
The GDL 39 is specified for operation from 20°C to +60°C (-4°F to 140°F), at altitudes to 55,000 ft and nominal operating velocities from 0 – 800 kts (411 m/s). It accepts 10 to 32 VDC input at 3.5 W max., with a lithium-ion rechargeable battery and battery charge power rated at 4.5 W max.

Access Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B) traffic and subscription-free weather on your aviation portable or mobile device with the GDL 39 ADS-B receiver. When using Garmin Pilot, the GDL 39 can provide highly accurate WAAS GPS data.
Comprehensive Aviation Weather
GDL 39 features ADS-B “In” datalink technology that allows it to receive subscription-free Flight Information Service-Broadcast (FIS-B) weather information over the FAA’s 978 MHz Universal Access Transceiver (UAT) uplink. Easily access animated NEXRAD radar, METARs, TAFs, winds and temperatures aloft, PIREPs, NOTAMs and more right on your compatible Garmin aviation portable or through the Garmin Pilot app on your iPad® or Android™ device.¹
Spot Potential Traffic Threats
GDL 39 can receive ADS-B position reports directly from other aircraft in your vicinity. Because the FAA permits ADS-B broadcasts on 2 frequencies (978 UAT and 1090 ES), GDL 39 contains both receivers so you can see a comprehensive view of all ADS-B “Out” equipped targets. The compatible display² will alert you by announcing traffic targets both audibly and visually. Spoken audio alerts announce “Traffic, Traffic” to get you looking right away.
ADS-B “In” technology also allows the GDL 39 to receive Traffic Information Service-Broadcast (TIS-B) information. TIS-B allows you to view the same dynamic traffic picture that ATC ground controllers are seeing when you're either participating with an ADS-B “Out” solution or within a certain range of another ADS-B “Out” participating aircraft when within a service area.³ Our correlation technology automatically displays the highest-integrity traffic data from multiple sources, preventing ghost or duplicate targets.
Advanced Display Capabilities
With Garmin Pilot on your mobile device, you can receive advanced traffic display features like TargetTrend™ relative motion tracking that provides a faster, more intuitive way of judging target trajectories and closure rates in relation to your aircraft's position. TargetTrend relies on ADS-B “Out” equipped targets, so while not all targets will display with trajectories today, this feature will be come increasingly beneficial to pilots in the future. TerminalTraffic provides pilots with the most comprehensive picture of ADS-B-equipped aircraft and ground vehicles in the airport environment. ADS-B-equipped aircraft in-flight are easily distinguished from ground vehicles and taxiing aircraft, which are displayed using distinct colors and symbols.
More Accurate GPS
GDL 39 can provide highly accurate WAAS GPS location information to your mobile device — such as an iPad® — using Bluetooth technology. This provides your device with the precision you’d expect from our aviation-grade navigation devices, updating at a rate of up to 5 times per second depending on the capability of the device used.
Go Wireless
With built-in Bluetooth® capability, GDL 39 can wirelessly send the data it collects to devices running the Garmin Pilot, ForeFlight Mobile and FltPlan Go apps, as well as the aera® 795/796 and aera 660. GDL 39 collects and stores all available traffic and weather data in your vicinity so it can be available as soon as you turn on your display. It's capable of simultaneously providing wireless data to 2 devices while hardwired to a third. As opposed to using a Wi-Fi® link, Bluetooth® lets you stay connected while on the ground so you can continually receive the latest weather reports as long as you have a data connection — no manual switching of networks required. Just set it up once and it will automatically remember and pair with your mobile device the next time you hop in the cockpit.
A cigarette lighter adapter comes included for onboard power and a wiring harness can be included with your GDL 39 for connectivity to a compatible portable device.
*GPS receiver has a nominal operating velocity range of 0 – 800 kts (411 m/s).
GDL 39 is a non-certified receive-only product. It does not provide ADS-B “Out” capability to satisfy FAA mandate requirements.
¹Not all FIS-B products may be available across all devices. Check your Pilot's Guide for specifics about which products are available on your device.
²Both the audible traffic alerting feature and TargetTrend™ require compatible displays. Check the Pilot’s Guide for specific capabilities available on your display.
³To maximize available traffic information for the display, the aircraft should also be equipped with a compliant ADS-B “Out” solution like the GDL 88 or GTX 330ES/33/23 ES transponders with a compatible WAAS position source. Visit the Garmin ADS-B Academy for more information.
